Exam Overview

The MPSC Combine examination offers the largest number of vacancies after Rajyaseva. A single Prelims feeds both Group B and Group C cadres, so one application opens several doors: PSI, STI and ASO in Group B, and Tax Assistant, Clerk-Typist and Sub-Inspector (State Excise) in Group C.

With more vacancies and comparatively lower competition than Rajyaseva, many candidates target this exam for their first selection.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A bachelor's degree in any discipline for all posts.
  • Clerk-Typist additionally requires a typing certificate (Marathi 30 wpm / English 40 wpm).
  • PSI and Sub-Inspector posts carry physical standards: 165 cm height for men (79 cm chest, +5 cm expansion) and 157 cm for women.

Age Limit

PSI: 19-31 (Open) / 19-34 (reserved). STI, ASO and Group C posts: 18-38 (Open) / 18-43 (reserved). The PSI limit is lower than the rest, so check it before applying.

Exam Pattern

Prelims: one 100-question, 100-mark paper in one hour, with 25% negative marking.

Mains: Paper I (Marathi and English, 200 marks) is common; Paper II (200 marks) is post-specific.

Final stage: PSI has a physical test (100) and interview (40); STI and ASO have an interview (40); Group C posts have no interview, though Clerk-Typist has a typing test.

Syllabus

Prelims: current affairs, history and geography of Maharashtra and India, polity and Panchayat Raj, economy, general science, reasoning and arithmetic.

Mains Paper I: Marathi and English grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.

Mains Paper II: post-specific - law for PSI, taxation and state economy for STI, secretariat procedure and RTI for ASO.

Salary & Posts

PSI, STI and ASO sit in pay level S-14 (₹38,600 - ₹1,22,800), around ₹55,000-60,000 gross. Tax Assistant is S-8 and Clerk-Typist S-6.

Cut Off

Recent Combine Prelims cut-offs (out of 100) have trended around 60-70 for Group B and 55-65 for Group C in the Open category. These are estimates; the commission publishes official figures after each result.

How to Prepare

1. Prelims is one hour - speed decides it

100 questions in 60 minutes is 36 seconds each. Knowing the material is not enough; it has to come back fast. Timed tests are the only way to build that.

2. Do the negative-marking maths

At 25%, four wrong answers cancel one right one. Avoid blind guesses, but answering when you can eliminate two options is worth it.

3. Do not underrate the language paper

Mains Paper I has a small, closed syllabus and is the easiest place to bank marks.

4. Start physical training now if you want PSI

Waiting until you clear the written exam is too late.
