Exam Overview

The Talathi is the Revenue Department's principal officer at village level, responsible for the 7/12 extract, mutation entries, crop inspection, land revenue collection and damage assessment during natural calamities.

For graduates it is often the quickest route into government service: there is no interview and selection rests entirely on written marks. Recruitment is district-wise and posting follows the district applied from.

Eligibility Criteria

A bachelor's degree in any discipline plus an MS-CIT or equivalent computer certificate, which is compulsory. Knowledge of Marathi is required, and a domicile of the district applied from is generally expected.

Age Limit

18-38 years (Open), 18-43 (backward classes) and 18-45 for persons with disability, with further relaxations for ex-servicemen and project-affected candidates.

Exam Pattern

A computer-based test with no interview; selection is purely on written marks. Four sections of 25 questions each - Marathi, English, general knowledge and reasoning/mathematics - carrying 2 marks per question for a 200-mark total in 120 minutes, with 25% negative marking. Because the exam runs in multiple shifts, normalisation is applied.

Syllabus

Marathi and English: grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.

General knowledge: Maharashtra history, geography and polity, the Constitution and Panchayat Raj, and specifically revenue administration - the Land Revenue Code, the 7/12 extract and mutation entries - plus agriculture and rural development schemes.

Reasoning and mathematics: series, coding, blood relations, percentages, averages, ratio, profit and loss, time-work-speed and mensuration.

Salary & Posts

Pay level S-8 (₹25,500 - ₹81,100), roughly ₹38,000-45,000 gross. Promotion runs Talathi to Circle Officer to Naib Tahsildar to Tahsildar, with departmental examinations along the way.

Cut Off

Cut-offs vary by district and shift. Recent trends out of 200: 140-160 (Open), 135-155 (OBC), 125-145 (SC) and 110-135 (ST). Given the competition, target above 160; with negative marking, accuracy matters as much as coverage.

How to Prepare

1. The two language papers are half the exam

Marathi and English together carry 100 of 200 marks, with small fixed syllabuses. Scoring 85+ here is realistic, and it is where most candidates fall short.

2. Study revenue administration specifically

The Land Revenue Code, 7/12 extract and mutation entries come up every year and appear in no other exam, so most candidates skip them.

3. Respect the negative marking

Each wrong answer costs 0.5. Ten bad guesses is five marks - decisive near the cut-off.

4. Understand normalisation

Scores are adjusted for shift difficulty, so do not panic comparing your paper with another shift.

5. Practise on a screen

The exam is computer-based; reading on screen is a separate skill from reading on paper.
