The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) is the constitutional body that selects officers for the state's administrative services — Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tahsildar, Block Development Officer, Naib Tahsildar and clerical grades alike.
MPSC's examinations fall into two broad tracks. The Rajyaseva examination fills Group A and Group B gazetted posts through three stages: Prelims, Mains and an interview. The Combined Preliminary examination covers Group B non-gazetted and Group C cadres together, with a single prelim leading to separate mains papers for different posts.
Most posts require a degree from a recognised university. The usual age range is 19 to 38 for the open category, with a five-year relaxation for reserved categories. Some posts add physical standards or a specific academic stream, so read the conditions in each advertisement separately.
The commonest mistake is collecting reference books. In practice the State Board textbooks for classes 6 to 12 are the foundation, and the commission's past papers are the map. Until you can see which topics the commission returns to and how often, there is no direction to the reading.
Current affairs is simultaneously the highest-scoring and the most neglected component. Fifteen to twenty minutes every day beats a month of cramming before the exam.
